Several ago the name Susan Boyle meant nothing to me. Now after repeatedly listening to Susan’s recent performance of “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables on a British talent show last Saturday, I’ve been struck/ stirred/inspired/encouraged/challenged. THIS is what giftedness and inspiration looks like. I’m addicted to her naïve honesty and childlikeness made perfect through innate and powerful expression, and keep returning to YouTube for more – more of whatever is so pure and unrestrained that comes from her heart in song.
Could it be that God has likewise implanted some equally unique talent/gift in each and every one of us? The very thought gives me chills.
Susan has lived a quiet and humble life. As she approaches her 48th birthday, her incredible singing voice just now has been exposed to the world…and the world can’t help but both applaud and weep in response.
It seems to me she is sweeping the globe with understated/unspoken virtues emanating from deep within her soul – some sort of feisty tenderness that takes shape when she sings to transform those who listen. Her dynamics pull the listener to a high place above the din of ordinary rote staleness. There is something passionate about this simple, plain woman from some small village in Scotland – this person who suffered oxygen deprivation at birth and struggled with learning disabilities as a result – this person who was so often ridiculed by her peers and serves in her local community by helping those less fortunate.
“The last shall be first.” So it is with Susan Boyle as she counters the counterfeit and teaches us all how to be real.
