Last night a grandpa-sized, native Michigan crawdad traveled across state lines to Illinois (and the big city of Chicago) with our son and grandson. Today he will become the star of kindergarten show-and-tell – then will be released to the “wild” of the Chicago River to find a new lifestyle.
He was lazily sitting on the frame of our boat hoist on Saturday, minding his own business, no doubt enjoying the swish of fresh water as the waves pushed past him. Then bingo, he was swept out of the water by deft hands, teased into aggression mode, put on display, photographed (his picture was then posted on Facebook), and finally imprisoned in a plastic bucket. Now his adaptation skills will be pushed to the max as he goes several days without food only to be relocated in polluted water with who-knows-what to eat.
This is a good object lesson: sometimes life is full of surprises.
