Half an hour after sunset I slipped outside and stretched out, flat on my back, on the wooden bench edging our deck. Oak leaves flapped in the wind high above,
dancing beneath the backdrop of a clear, still-blue northern sky. I tucked a lightweight blanket over my feet
and pulled it up to my chin.
Savoring the soft wind on my skin, I closed my eyes. Delicious.
When I opened them a few minutes later, dazzling cloud
formations were slowly waltzing across the sky above me. They assumed shapes like cut-out paper dolls
holding hands, and floated along gently, somehow illumined from the inside-out by
fire from a sun that had already vanished from sight.
