Ahhhhhh.....! It’s
good to let down after a busy Thanksgiving at our son’s house, and bask in
sweet new memories with yet another turkey under the belt (literally).
Our family jam session before The Big Meal was just one of
many high points of the day, hilarious and emotional and inspiring and endearing
and just plain fun. I’ve not let my hair down like that for a long time. The following instruments shaped our band that was crammed in a
cubbyhole in the basement: keyboard, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, mandolin,
two violins, snare drums and cymbals, bongo drums, a flute, and various
maraca-like shakers and wooden percussion-like striking instruments for the
younger kids. And honestly, the
sound was REALLY GOOD!
Music varied from “Rock Me Mama Like a Wagon Wheel”
(amusing, cute, peppy) to “We Gather Together to Ask the Lord’s Blessing” (reverent,
grateful) and “Joy to the World”
(celebratory). The violinists played a beautiful classical duet, and we had
two-part, three-part, and even four-part vocal harmony on some songs.
Enjoying professional music is one thing, but making it is
another. And we made it. Together.
Tonight I’m thankful for
all the unique, fascinating members of this family who help and support each
other in both big and small ways (as my daughter-in-law so appreciatively said during a champagne
toast to the family), who dance together in the trenches of everyday life, even when melodies
fade.
