Time measures ongoing existence,
moment-by-moment. We live in current seconds and minutes, remember those in the past, and anticipate more in the
future. This evening it was just the right time to enjoy dinner with old
friends at an upscale restaurant in a quiet nearby town (see blog for May 6
entitled “Linking Up”).
We hadn’t seen this couple
face-to-face for over two decades and hadn’t lived life with them for nearly
three, and yet the long-ago days of connection seemed like only yesterday.
Although the years had sculpted each of us differently with refining chisels,
our relationships had not been worn away by the winds of time or distance.
How can this be explained? It may have
to do with mutual experiences during our earlier time together, but seems more
than that. We were open and
authentic from the beginning – no masks or pretenses allowed – and that still
applies. Perhaps transparency is the glue that seals lasting friendships and enables old friends to pick up where they left off, even another lifetime ago.
