The vacant lot down the road has been reclaimed by
nature. A crowded throng of Queen
Anne’s Lace now reigns supreme where once a house stood.
This evening heavy clouds hung over the lake and pressed close,
encapsulating and magnifying lakeside details. I stopped to admire the showy flowers, then tiptoed down
the old pathway until completely enveloped by clusters of white. Their heady aroma, heavy with
mustiness, transported me back in time to another lake and time, and childhood
memories of similar patches of white finery.
I brushed elbows with the delicate, ornamental blossoms, and
felt a little bit like a princess looking eye-to-eye with her court. It was like walking through regal summer-style snowflakes, like joining royalty in
the midst of simplicity.
