A group of wild swans and a few ducks have congregated in a limited spot on the lake to jointly keep the ice open as long as possible. Their little resort area seems quite sufficient. They contentedly sit on the edge of the ice and preen themselves around the “pool” or else nap with their heads tucked under their wings. Sometimes they idly paddle with leisurely strokes through the icy water, and/or tip their tails to the sky and look for a snack underwater. It all looks pretty relaxed to me, as if they’re truly enjoying their frozen Christmas.
However, I personally have to wonder why they linger here once the weather turns cold. I guess they’re not so different than Dorothy and Toto who figured out the mantra for all of us: there’s no place like home.
