When the Heart is Full

Every time I visit
The handsome young man
With the horseshoe scar
On the side of his head
(The surgical mark
Of the brain cancer beast),
I leave him changed
For the better.

I am filled up somehow,
Abundantly so.

Driving home
After delivering muffins,
A phrase kept replaying
In my mind:
“When the heart is full,
Life can’t be empty.”

A full heart seems profound
In the face of such
Loss and uncertainty,
And yet each time
I stand in his presence
An almighty love descends
And pushes panic aside,
At least for the moment.

And that greater reality,
Mysterious and yet real,
Occupies my heart
Until it is full and can
Hold nothing else.
