As a child, my husband often tagged along on Audubon
outings with his bird-loving mother. He has
always had an affinity for the feathered friends of his youth, and knows a lot
about their various calls, habitats, behaviors, and preferences.
Recently Bob-the-Builder (think hubby) noticed a pair of
wood ducks scouting the lake for a place to raise their family, and so constructed
a deluxe (all-cedar) nesting suite for them. The box is to be mounted on a pole
not far from the water’s edge, and deserves a five-star rating. It is already furnished with the equivalent
of a feather bed: a five-inch mattress of soft cedar shavings.
If I were a wood duck, I’d think it the perfect place, a
luxury chateau on the Riviera-gone-boonies.
Duck accommodations just don’t get any better.
