The Sleepover

Last night 5 granddaughters between the ages of 6 and 2 came to a sleepover at our house. But the experience was about a lot more than sleep!

It all started yesterday afternoon when we attended The Grand Festival, a remarkably well planned, county-sponsored event for grandparents and their grandkids. A rock-climbing wall, bouncy house with a bouncy slide, miniature train, and convincing magician were among the highlights.

We returned home to a swim in the lake followed by popcorn and movies in front of the TV.

This morning, after Grampa’s famous breakfast of pancakes and sausage, all the girls rode tubes behind the boat…multiple times. Then they enjoyed a picnic lunch on the pier and playtime in our two rope hammocks before heading home.

You might wonder if I have a special stand-out memory, but it is hard for me to pick just one.  However, it’s always heart-warming to watch these similarly-aged girls from two different families relate, especially in the context of discovery.  I think among plenty of other things, I’ll remember their joint effort to hold the boat at the pier in the midst of insistent waves when they learned an important lesson: there is strength in numbers.
