Today began in the kitchen, at the request of my visitor. First we ceremoniously extracted carrot juice with the good old faithful Champion Juicer. She spooned the orange froth from the top into a bowl (I usually discard it) and added a pinch of stevia to create “carrot whipped cream.” What a discovery!
Next we rolled, cut, and decorated butter cookies with
tinted egg yolk paint (the painting came before
baking). My artistic companion enjoyed creating the rainbow palette and designing customized cookies.
While lunch quiche and cookies baked in the oven, we crafted yarn doll sisters in the spirit of Little House on the Prairie.
A bonafide tea party followed, served on girly antique plates: two kinds of fragrant quiche, fresh-picked blueberries, assorted raw
veggies, fresh-baked cookies, and spicy orange tea.
After lunch, the yarn dolls went to play with felt dolls who live in a luxurious felt house. The felt and yarn dolls turned out to be cousins, so it was a grand reunion!
Finally, we tried shading and highlighting still-life
paintings on canvas with oil pastels, a new medium for both of us.
And so went my one-on-one day (no interruptions) with this visiting 6-year-old granddaughter
who lives far away on the map but close to my heart. It was a day to remember, marked by her eager
optimism, genuine respect, and sincere efforts to help me hear (she gets honors
among all the grandkids in this department).
Although we remained focused on our fun activities, the day was
about so much more. She literally made my day. If we’d purposed to
do these things by ourselves, or with someone else, it would have been an
entirely different day. Today was about
us, about choosing and honoring each other, about sweet communion.
