Tomorrow is Goodbye

Goodbye precious girls with diamond-studded blue eyes alive with light: portals of hope. Goodbye blonde hair flying beneath the summer sun, wisps of spun gold.

Goodbye weaving sampler, spool knitting, handcrafted ballet tutu, painted sun catchers, macramé.  Goodbye tea party quiche and cookies served on fine antique china. Goodbye toasted marshmallows, ice cream bars, and lakeside tacos on the deck.

Goodbye little head of the tender one tucked beneath my chin.  Goodbye innocent, trusting childlikeness.

Art the Turtle says goodbye.  So do the pet snail, luna moth, and strange green beetle. The hammocks wave goodbye in the breeze, remembering your bouncy playfulness.  Sandbox toys sit idly inside the bench seat, whispering a quiet adieu.  If the Moomba, Hobie, pontoon and fishing boat could do so, they might sing a song of fond farewell – a rumbling, sail-flapping nautical chorale – in memory of sun-spangled adventures.  Flexaboards, tubes, kayaks, lifejackets, and kneeboard stand where you last left them, as if stoically waiting for a promised reunion – somehow, sometime.

Goodbye to your eager greetings and leg hugs, your acceptance of me just as I am, wrinkles, deafness, and all.  Goodbye through mortality’s peephole, where grains of time run through the hourglass, each one a gilded treasure.  Nana loves you.
