Today was a prep day for the upcoming extended holiday
weekend, which included baking up a storm. Sometimes fun requires effort, maybe even lots of it. The ensuing work becomes a sort of living, breathing grace.

The weatherman has promised perfect conditions for Labor Day
weekend: Summer’s Last Gasp. It will be
hot and sunny with blue skies, just the way we like it at the lake. Bright, with blinding diamonds reflecting on
the water’s surface.
Our older daughter and her husband, two sons and a young
friend, will arrive later this evening. We’ll play hard (those boys get crazy
in the tubes behind the boat), and celebrate our daughter’s 39th
birthday (she requested the gluten-free, sugar-free pie in the picture above,
but I opted to make a chocolate cake as well for the boys’ sake). It will be especially sweet for that bunch to
overlap on Sunday with locals: our older son, his wife, and their five
children.
All these people are so precious to us. We are lavishly blessed!
As newlyweds back in 1971, my husband and I shared a dream
to someday live lakeside. Glory to God,
it came true! As my husband’s cousin said earlier this summer, “Out of all of us
(meaning the herd of cousins who grew up together on the lake), you’re living
the dream, Mulie. You’re living the dream.”
Yes. We are doing
just that, even as we age, for as long as we can.
