Every few years our house molts, reptilian-like. Of course
this isn’t because it is outgrowing its exterior, but the paint splits anyway
with little hairline cracks. Eventually
these open to expose nude patches of wood underneath.
A putty knife coaxes whatever wants to come off easily
(which seems far too much), leaving the
house looking wounded and vulnerable.
Then we come to its rescue and paint over the bare underboards with new
skin. Again. Until the next time.
