Our New Neighbor!

Our friends half-a-mile down the road own two miniature horses, a white stallion and coal-black mare.  Although they keep them separated in different stalls, the persistent stallion managed to finagle an intimate moment some months back, and on Friday morning, a foal was born.

I saw him tonight – a cinnamon colored, diminutive equine with quivering ribs and delicate hooves that look like little chunks of shiny black coal. His face wore a white mask, and his thin wisps of mane and tail appeared to have black roots.

He seemed fragile and vulnerable, like a one of the china horses I collected as a child, and yet very full of the gift of life so recently bestowed.  An un-planned-for surprise, he is the new joy of the owners, and will be the object of a forthcoming welcome-to-the-world visit from our grandkids!
