You Never Fully Leave a Place You Love

I said farewell to the house for the last time tonight.  “How do you do this – how do you say goodbye to a house where you’ve lived for 30 years?” I asked Fritz and Freddy with silent tears dripping down my chin.

“You just ride away and don’t look back,” Fritz said, quoting one of his famous Louis L’Amour westerns.  Of course.  That would work for him.  All or none.  Gallop into the sunset and all that.

I, on the other hand, hugged the big hand-hewn beam beside the steps and pressed my face into its roughness.  Then I walked out the door, carrying something of the place with me while leaving a little piece of me behind.   In my mind, you never fully leave a place you love.
